Abigail Abugire Shatters National Record with Historic 1500m Run at Bryan Clay Invitational

Ghanaian middle-distance star Abigail Abugire has written herself into the annals of Ghanaian athletics history, setting a new national record in the women’s 1500 metres at the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, California over the weekend.

The former Aduman Senior High School standout clocked a scintillating 4:13.03, obliterating the previous national mark of 4:17.75 that Agnes Abu had held since 2017,a record that had stood for nearly a decade. Abugire, now representing West Texas A&M University, delivered the kind of performance that signals she is no longer just a promising prospect, but a genuine force on the international stage.

What made the weekend even more extraordinary was what came the day before. Just 24 hours ahead of her record-breaking 1500m, Abugire put on a commanding display in the women’s 800 metres, leading from gun to tape to win in a breathtaking 2:01.79, a time that ranks as the second-fastest ever recorded in the entire history of NCAA Division II.
