One boxing weight division that has created a lot of arguments and debates is the welterweight class.
On November 24, 2025, Sampson Segbezi 9-0 of Ashaiman won the national title after Isaac Commey of Chorkor was disqualified for head butting. Commey was also sanctioned by the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA).
After the bout, many contenders in the division have called on Segbedzi to defend against them.
Currently, Henry Malm 9-0 who represented Ghana at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games qualifiers and 2023 African Games is leading at Boxrec as the best welterweight, followed by title holder, Sampson Segbedzi at number two.
Taking the third position is Habib Kehinde Giwa, Maxwell Awuku is at fourth place, followed at fifth position by Fred Lawson, with Jessie Lartey at sixth positon.
The seventh position is occupied by Thompson Fosu, Philip Quartey at eighth and Abdul Aziz Quartey at ninth position.
Boxing fans are calling on a promoter to stage Sampson Segbedzi against Henry Malm to determine who is the true champion.
Segbedzi says if the purse is good, he is ever ready for a showdown. “I am the king of the welterweights and i don’t fear anyone. If the money is good, we have a fight” he said
