21-year-old Ghanaian swim star clocked 29.87 seconds at the World Aquatics Championships, showcasing Ghana’s rising talent in global swimming
Ghana’s rising swimming star Nubia Adjei delivered a valiant performance in Heat 2 of the women’s 50m backstroke at the 2024 World Aquatics Swimming Championships (25m) in Budapest, Hungary.
Despite her determination, the 21-year-old placed fifth in her heat, clocking a time of 29.87 seconds at the prestigious short-course event.
Adjei faced stiff competition in her heat, finishing behind leaders Abril Aunchayna of Uruguay (27.57 seconds), Jessica Humphrey of Namibia (28.52 seconds), Leanna Wainwright of Jamaica (29.54 seconds), and Lara Gimenez Yegros of Paraguay (29.60 seconds).
Her efforts placed her 43rd overall out of 58 swimmers, falling short of the top-16 cut-off required to progress to the semi-finals.
The final qualifying spot was secured by Czech swimmer Daryna Nabojcenko with a swift 26.86 seconds.
This marks Adjei’s second event at the championships, following an earlier elimination in the women’s 100m backstroke, where she finished eighth in her heat and 58th overall.
The young Ghanaian had hoped to improve her performance in the 50m backstroke but faced an uphill battle in a field stacked with world-class talent.
The 2024 World Aquatics Swimming Championships, hosted at Budapest’s iconic Danube Arena, kicked off on Tuesday (10 December) and will continue until Sunday (15 December).
The tournament features elite swimmers from across the globe competing for glory in the 25m pool format.
While the competition did not yield the results Adjei might have hoped for, her participation highlights Ghana’s growing presence on the global swimming stage.
Adjei’s has just started, and she will learn from her mistakes to become a better swimmer from her experience in Budapest as she strives for future success.
