President of the United Coaches Association of Ghana Mr. Charles Quartey has called on government to invest in young boxers who are selected to represent the nation as they have talent to become world champions.
Speaking exclusively on Omashi TV’s flagship programme, The Big Fight Night he said there are many talented boxers in Ghana but they lack exposure and experience.
The founder and head trainer at the Charles Quartey Boxing Foundation who led the national youth team to Montenegro, Serbia for the 2024 IBA Youth World International competition said the event was a great experience, but officiating affected countries like Ghana and no boxer reached the medal zone to earn cash reward.
He said the team did not go on time and the weather affected them, however it was a good tournament.
He also called for training of Ghanaian international technical officers and ring officials like referees and judges.
Coach Charles Quartey who is an expert in handling youth boxers said Ghana needs to be informed and educated enough before deciding to choose IBA or World Boxing.
He was satisfied with the number of star rated coaches, but advised the trainers not to mix training of amateurs with professionals.
He also urged the Ghana Boxing Authority GBA to steer affairs fairly and professionally not to tarnish the hard won image and reputation built by personalities like Samir Captan, Moses Foh Amoaning and Peter Zwennes.
Charles Quartey expressed concerns over the high cost in hiring the Bukom Boxing Arena for boxing activities and urged the Ga chiefs who gave the site to SSNIT to retrieve the land if boxers are going to be exploited and suffer instead of gaining.
“Let me use this Omashi TV platform to also appeal to boxing fans to behave at the Arena, because their behavior to throwing things into the ring also sends people away” he stressed.
He also asked for better remuneration of coaches who take care of boxers to reach the limelight.
He viewed the future as very bright for Ghana Boxing because there are many good juvenile boxers but appealed to government to build a national boxing training center.
He commended his executives at the United Coaches front and also the Ghana Boxing Federation (GBF).
