Local players should be given the chance in the Black Stars – Stephen Appiah

Former Ghana captain Stephen Appiah has joined calls for home-based players to be given the chance to play in the Black Stars.

He believes these players are capable of competing with foreign-based players when given the necessary confidence to showcase their talent.

Two weeks ago, former Ghana international Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu also made a similar call for the inclusion of local players in the Black Stars squads.

“I think we have to give the local players the chance and the confidence to play for the national team,” Appiah told the Parliamentary Select Committee examining the petition submitted by the Save Ghana Football Demonstrators on Wednesday.

“So in our time, maybe there were certain players who looked as if they were key players in the team. We were not key players.

“We had players like William Tiero and others who were pushing us, so we have to make sure that we are not going to allow them to take our positions.”

The Black Stars have yet to secure a win in their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign, suffering a 1-0 defeat to Angola in Kumasi and drawing 1-1 against Niger in Morocco.

Angola leads Group F with 6 points, followed by Sudan with 3, while Ghana and Niger each have 1 point at the bottom of the group.
