Asante Kotoko performed an outstanding comeback to defeat Nsoatreman 2-1 and claim the J.A Kufuor Cup at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi on Sunday, February 18, 2024.
The much talked about match kicked off with both teams donning similar yellow kits. However, in the 25th minute, the game was briefly halted to allow Kotoko to switch to white jerseys for better visibility and distinction.
Despite a goalless first half, the deadlock was broken by Abdul Rahman, who netted the opener for Nsoatreman.
After the break, Asante Kotoko intensified their efforts to level the score, with Ugandan striker Steven Mukwala finding the back of the net in the 57th minute.
Nsoatreman had an opportunity to regain the lead from the penalty spot, but goalkeeper Frederick Asare denied Manaf Umar’s spot-kick.
In the 67th minute, Kotoko completed their comeback as Peter Amidu capitalized on a precise pass from Richmond Lamptey to secure the winning goal.
The JAK Foundation organized the match which serves as a tribute to the legacy of former Ghana President John Agyekum Kufuor, who held office for two terms from 2000 to 2008.
