Mr. Ben Nunoo Mensah, President of the Commonwealth Games Association Ghana has tipped Athletics, Boxing, Swimming and Weightlifting as the disciplines that can win medals for Ghana at the impending 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
Speaking to the media, he said preparations for the Games are underway and the various Federations are in non residential camping while others are preparing in at various places because the athletes are not yet together.
He expressed that Ghana has done well in previous Common Games in the late 1960s, 1970 and 1980s, but at the last Games in Australia 2018, they came home with only one bronze medals from boxing.
Also at the 2014 Games in Scotland, they won one bronze medal also in boxing.
The Commonwealth Games Association Ghana President who is also President of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) appealed for more financial investments in Ghana Sports.
He said the 2023 Africa Games should be a great platform to prepare Ghanaian athletes for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris France.
“I can say preparations for the next Olympic Games have started and our athletes are registering very good times. We must try to qualify in football because it has been a while since Ghana presented footballers at the Olympic Games, we are working hard and we shall succeed ” he said.
Athletes like Benjamin Azamati, Joseph Paul Amoah, Abigail Kwarteng and Deborah Acquah have done well with marvelous performances in recent times.
He thanked ANOCA for supporting some sports Federations who are currently preparing for international championships and the Commonwealth Games.
Ghana will be represented by 13 Federations at the Birmingham Games come starts from July 28 to August 8 this year.
The disciplines are athletes, boxing, cycling, badminton, hockey, table tennis, swimming, judo, beach volleyball and weightlifting.
The others are para athletics, para powerlifting and para cycling. All the disabled athletes are also preparing, hoping to get to the medal zone.
