The Wisdom Boxing Gym in Accra presented very skillful boxers at the recent National Individual Amateur Boxing Championship to select new members of the national team, the Black Bombers who will represent Ghana at the up coming 2022 Commonwealth Games.
The event started at the Accra Sports Stadium – Hathiramani Sports Hall, continued at the Bukom Square and ended at the Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra at James Town.
Though favourite boxer, 2016 Olympian, Wahid Omar lost at the semi finals, some of his colleagues managed to enter the finals and won the gold and silver.
FLY WEIGHT (52KG) Theophilus Allotey (Wisdom) beat Ebenezer Ankrah (B.Panthers) 3 – 2 to make it into the Bombers. He was rated as one of the best boxers of the event which was organized by the Ghana Boxing Federation (GBF).
WELTERWEIGHT (69 KG) Abubakar Quartey (Wisdom) was unlucky as he lost to Jessy Lartey (Reformers) by 3 – 2.
MIDDLE WEIGHT (75KG) BAWA SHERIFF (Upper East) who has been with Wisdom Gym for the past six years also beat David Amen (Volta Region) by 3 – 2.
Coach Dr. Ofori Asare is the Managing Coach at the Wisdom Gym. He is also the Technical Director of the Ghana Boxing Federation, and on record to be a four time Olympian as well as the coach who lead the Black Bombers to win a medal for Ghana at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
According to Dr. Asare, it was a good tournament and wished there are frequent contests to really test the best competence, preparedness and most durable boxers.
