Ghana’s Bastie Samir made his motherland proud during the weekend with a unanimous decision win over Cameroon’s Kamdam Kouengoue on Ace Power Promotions’ “Unfinished Business” card held at the La Palm Royal Beach Hotel in Accra.
The former Olympian returned to the ring after being inactive for more than a year to shake off his ring rust with Cameroon’s Kouengoue.
Even though Kouengoue had the reach and height advantage, Samir left no stone unturned and made sure to control the fight from start to finish, imposing his will on his opponent and giving him a dose of his lethal power. Yet, Kouengoue deserves props for not giving up entirely or getting knockout but standing his ground through the entire fight.
Samir who now has a record of 20-0-1 with 18 knockouts hopes that this win will propel his name and prepare him on his journey to becoming a continental or the next world champion to hail from Ghana.
On the same bill, Holy Dorgbetor put up an exceptional show of sportsmanship and true boxing talent to outpoint Emmanuel Quartey. The Jaw Breaker as he calls himself dominated Quartey in their 8-round featherweight contest with the judges’ scorecards reading 79-73, 79-73, and 80-73.
Dorgbetor’s team had hoped for a knockout in the early rounds of the fight but Quartey (24-6, 21 KOs) proved that he was well-conditioned and durable enough to go the distance.
During a brief media interaction after the fight, Dorbetor’s longtime trainer, Gershon Adzai told reporters that there is currently no boxer in the Ghanaian space or in the African continent that can stop his “boy”.
“He’s unstoppable now. He’s fast, strong and durable. There’s no one in Ghana or Africa who can match his energy. Holy is going to make Ghana proud… just keep supporting him,” he said through Frederick Ankomah, his translator.
When asked what the dream is for his fighter, Gershon Adzai told our reporter that Dorgbetor has always looked up to his role model Floyd Mayweather Jr. and hopes to cement his name in boxing history.
