MTN Ghana on Thursday held a meeting with the theme ‘From Compliance to Opportunity: Embedding ESG In Business’ as part of their Sustainability Week for the Bright Conversations at the head office at Ridge in Accra.
The resource people were Dr. Felix Addo- Yobo, Deputy Director and Advisor- SDCs Advisory Unit, Office of the President, Bernard Owusu Ansah Manager, Governance, Risk and Compliance – KPMG and Ms. Mina Pokuaa Agyeman representing UN Global Impact – Ghana, with Ms. Emefa Apawu as the Moderator.
According to Mr. Bernard Owusu Ansah, sustainability is a collective responsibility and leadership of businesses and government must to committed to it.
Dr. Felix Addo -Yobo hinted that sustainability is the new trend for businesses and called for enhancement in value creation.
He noted that leaving legacies for future generations is very important as humanity can be a risk with the way people are living carelessly which can cause the planet, earth to suffer.
Some of the benefits of sustainability he mentioned are beyond profits, such as trust with stakeholders, social contract and being innovative in the way of treating the environment.
Ms. Mina Pokuaa Agyeman touched on the impact with the involvement of more women in issues on environment, social and governance activities.
She touched on integrating sustainability, dealing with client’s human rights and labour.
She called for contributions from private sector to provide much data and government policy which is also very important.
It was observed that government is not doing well in management of sanitation.
Mr. Addo -Yobo commended MTN Ghana for the programme saying the right way to go is for humanity to be safe, while sustainability is very important.
He stressed that partnership is also very critical as people live in a global village, so everyone has a role to play.
Madam Adwoa Afriyie Wiafe, Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer of MTN Sustainability said MTN has an ambition to drive sustainability, going beyond compliance, like using solar energy, finding new ways for waste management and offering digital training for the youth and getting more women to be engaged and empowered.
Mrs. Georgina Asare Fiagbenu, Senior Manager for Corporate Communications at MTN Ghana advised the youth to take up the challenge to solve some of the problems identified, and take advantage of the benefits of AI and other technologies.
She said “Let’s make the world a better place for generations coming”
