Ghana national team head coach, Chris Hughton says his players are eager to do well for the country at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.
The continental tournament is scheduled to kick off in Ivory Coast on Saturday, January 13.
In a pre-tournament friendly against Namibia on Monday, the Black Stars failed to impress and drew goalless.
Speaking after the game, Coach Chris Hughton said his team is determined to perform well at the AFCON although things do not look good.
He indicated that his players desperately want to do well for Ghana.
“How far we can go depends on the performances that we can put in. One thing I know is that this is a group of players that want to do well. And if you have a group of players that desperately want to do well you never know what can happen and I certainly don’t want to be a head coach of a team that doesn’t think that we have a chance of winning it,” Chris Hughton told the press.
The Ghana coach continued, “That has to be the mentality going into the tournament but we know we have to play well. Things have to go our way, we have to be fortunate with injuries and we have to be very optimistic that we can do very well.”
Ghana at the 2023 AFCON will compete with Cape Verde, Egypt, and Mozambique.
The Black Stars open their campaign at the tournament on Sunday, January 14, when they face off with Cape Verde.
