Accra-born Sheriff “One Time” Quaye successfully defended his WBO Africa Lightweight strap against a game and poised Bright Ayala. The bout which was the main event of a Swavy Blu Boxing Promotions bill at the Golden Beach Resort, Korle Gonno saw Wisdom Gym’s Ayala come out all guns blazing once the bell sounded for the commencement of the tension-laden affair.
Quaye resorted to jabbing and retreating cautiously with nice footwork whiles the previously 16-1-1 Ayala advanced ferociously with left-right combinations and occasional hooks and roundhouse punches; majority of which Sheriff Quaye avoided.
The end would come when Sheriff decided to dig his feet in and crack. Persistent peppering with precision and accuracy finally got to Ayala who eventually submitted in round eight
Trainer of Ayala Dr. Ofori Asare of Ghana’s Black Bombers believes his fighter could have done better but also took the opportunity to congratulate the Champion and wish him well.
He however mooted the desire for a rematch. Quaye, now 22-3 1, however, might have his eyes fixed on bigger things as the win is sure to notch him further up his current rating of number 15 in the WBO world rankings.
“A world championship opportunity might be on the horizon”, said Lawrence Carl Lokko, Head Trainer of the Bronx Boxing Gym where Quaye currently trains.
The bout was sanctioned by the Ghana Boxing Authority and supervised by WBO Africa Representative Samir Captan. The bill featured many other exciting fighters like Felix “Alvaro” Ajom, Jacob Dickson, Emmanuel Quartey, Stanley Nyantakyi, Osumanu Haruna, Jacob Tetteh Laryea, Moses Adjei Selvi, Isaac Aryee, Nigerian welterweight based in Ghana Sampson Solomon etc. and was supported by Bronx Boxing Promotions, De Zone Beach Resort and Golden Beach Resort .
Also present were Ghana Boxing Federation Prez Bernard Quartey, Currency Boxing Management Capo Bright Aboagye, CEO of Osibor Boxing Management Gordon Frimpong, Ghana Boxing Authority 2nd Vice President Roger Barnor, Swavy Blu Boxing Promotions Boss Manasseh Tagoe among other dignitaries.
